The Moorabool Valley
On the road to Ballarat is the Moorabool Valley, an intriguing sub-region with a concentration of five-star wineries.
There’s a volcano in the area that has created black basalt and limestone soils, and due to the terrain it sits in a rain shadow. Conditions such as drought make this one of the most complicated places to make wine, yet it’s here that some of the region’s best winemaking happens.
It’s home to old, close-planted vines with low yields that produce special wines – ‘complexity’ and ‘character’ are the catchcries. Pinot noir is the calling card, but its warmer, inland plains have seen producers experiment with some unusual varieties, including gamay, pinot meunier, sangiovese and cabernet franc, to name a few.

With just over 14 acres under plantation the property supports six varieties of grape; Shiraz, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay & Semillon.
Provenance has always had the one simple objective: to make great wines that exhibit the fruit quality and terroir of special vineyards.
Rowsley Fault Vineyard
With our vineyard being located in the Moorabool Valley region, we have been able to focus on small plot viticulture and can offer an amazing range of varieties. Whilst we specialise in Pinot Noir, we also have an exciting range of exotic European varieties including Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre (Mataro), Zinfandel, Gamay, Cab Franc, Viognier & Graciano.
In the winery we try to intervene as little as possible. The fruit is picked to balance natural acid and flavour. Natural fermentations using indigenous yeast ( the yeast naturally occurring on the grapes) are used to give complexity and help express the characteristics of our Terroir.
